Queen Plum

The plum,
it hardly needs to be said,
is the queen of all fruit--
robust and firm,
tart and juicy,
loud and luscious.
Let the others
pay her homage,
dance before her,
make way at the market--
the pitiable peach,
its embarrassing fuzz,
the nectarine
all thick and bloody,
the laughable little apricot
little more than pit.

This is the plum
there are none like her
in the world,
all sing praise!
all cheer gratitude!
all kneel, all bow, all eat!
