The Prune

At the market today
there are the familial plum
varieties:
black, red, green
and the odd little prune
the squat little one
how he must envy the others
their fine plum bodies
their shining round plumpness
their skin like fine plumage,
oh this poor little cousin
not as sweet
not as juicy
not as luscious
never quite ripe
but how my grandmother favored it!
how she loved it as one might love
a favored child.
little plum!
