Poem for a leap day girl

(February 29, 2000)

by Alan Shefsky

Little frog with cotton hat
Bright cricket in your crib
Round-red rabbit stirring in sleep
Furry white kangaroo.

Grasshopper in dewy grass
Fawn at your mother's flank
Snowy leopard new to its spots
Lovely lemur, like Zaboo.

Ruby reaching, open eyes
It is a fine day for leaping.
